My journey to inclusive music education

Hi, I’m Justin McKee, founder of MJ Music Training. I have been teaching music for over 20 years. My mission is simple: to empower music teachers with the tools and skills to teach neurodivergent learners. I believe music belongs to everyone, and with the right guidance, every student can experience the joy and personal growth that comes from learning to play an instrument.

It began with one student

My journey into inclusive music education began in 2021 when I was invited to teach a student with Down Syndrome. At the time, I had no formal experience working with neurodivergent learners and was upfront about that. I learned that previous teachers had declined to take on the opportunity because they were unsure how to approach things; this made it impossible to say no. I assured the parents that I was willing to give it my best effort, if they were open to collaborating with me and navigating the journey together.

That “yes” was the beginning of an incredible adventure. Since then, I’ve been privileged to teach over 40 neurodivergent students the piano. Each one has brought a unique story and perspective, teaching me as much as—if not more than—I’ve taught them. It’s been an invaluable experience that continues to shape the way I teach.

I have also worked with another 23 neurodivergent learners by leading small-group music classes within Primary School Inclusive programs. These classes provided a supportive and creative environment where neurodivergent students could express themselves and thrive through music.

Teaching with heart and collaboration

Over the years, I’ve worked with students with various exceptionalities, including Down Syndrome, autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. My approach is simple but impactful—empower each student by focusing on their unique strengths. Every piano lesson is tailored to meet their individual needs, ensuring the learning process is engaging, enjoyable, and meaningful.

This approach isn’t something I do alone. Collaboration is at the heart of what I do. I work closely with students, their families, and even other professionals to ensure the experience is holistic and supportive. Together, we create a joyful learning environment where students thrive.

Why MJ Music Training exists

My work has not only improved the lives of my students but has also ignited a passion for helping other educators. I saw a gap in resources and training for studio music teachers eager to teach neurodivergent learners. MJ Music Training was created to fill that gap.

Through workshops, resources, and training programs, I aim to equip music educators with the tools they need to create more inclusive and welcoming teaching spaces. By doing so, we make a broader impact, bringing the gift of music to more individuals of diverse abilities.
